World of Sports Pits Wineries of Sports Finest
Hitting the long ball in the World Series, putting
for a birdie at the US Open, the exhilaration of getting
the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500 –
all great accomplishments. Seeing a bottle of robust
wine get from the grapevine to the centerpiece of
a fine meal. So much heart and soul goes into all
of these.
In
a wine and sports clash of the titans, the Los Angeles
International Wine & Spirits Competition is hosting
the Wine World of Sports, a new special category within
the prestigious competition’s annual event dedicated
to the signature brands of personalities from the
world of sports. In the only sports celebrity wine
competition, sporting greats who’ve extended
their passions from the field to the vineyard will
be pitted against each other to see which of their
wines comes out on top.
The
competition, celebrating its 69th year, is May 28
– 30 at Fairplex, in Pomona. Wine, spirits and
olive oil judges from around the globe lend their
expertise to the competition, which has grown considerably
in the past few years, marking a significant increase
in its global influence, drawing entries from countries
such as Japan, Chile, New Zealand and Australia. Nearly
4,000 wines were entered in 2007, along with 56 tequilas
and nearly 400 olive oils.
